Twin towns
Since 1959, the town of Wittlich has been twinned with the Dutch town of Boxtel (approximately 29,000 inhabitants). Brunoy, a town with some 25,000 inhabitants just 22 kilometres southeast of Paris, has been Wittlich's twin town since 1979. In 1993 these two town twinnings were joined by Wellingborough, an English town in Northamptonshire. Wellingborough has 67,000 inhabitants including the adjoining districts.Relations among the towns are mutually promoted and consolidated in particular in cultural, business, sporting and social fields. Every year the inhabitants and citizens, schools, associations and institutions meet for joint activities in the twin towns or here in Wittlich. Wittlich's relations with the town of Zossen (approx. 6,200 inhabitants) in Brandenburg, to the south of Berlin are of particular importance. During the period of German Reunification assistance was provided here with help and advice.
Within the framework of aid on the basis of partnership, the town of Wittlich also has links with the commune of Buhoma (formerly Nyamutera) in Rwanda. Many projects, such as help to help themselves, have been realised by the State of Rhineland-Palatinate with support from Wittlich.
All those persons who have made these partnerships possible as part of their political responsibility, but also those who fill them with life, thus allowing relations between the towns and their people to grow, deserve our thanks.
