Where the steam engine once puffed...

The “Maare-Moselle” Cycle Trail

A railway line became an idyllic cycle trail: between Daun in the Eifel and Bernkastel-Kues on the Moselle, a 55 kilometres long stretch, for some years bikers, and rollerblade scaters have been gliding along instead of trains. Ramblers use the perfectly constructed cycle trail, which leads through a beautiful landscape as a hiking trail.

With its occasional gradients of a maximum of 2.5 percent, the cycle trail is suitable even for cyclists with less training and children. The new cycle trail can be recommended for those who want to cycle between the Vulkaneifel and the Moselle. A trip on the Maare-Moselle cycle trail is a trip through a charming and fascinating region where you are led across viaducts and bridges, and through former railway tunnels still with their unique colonies of bats.

The cycle trail leads down from the rather bleak Vulkaneifel into the Wittlich valley with its quite different landscape forms. Passing vineyards you reach the Town of Wittlich. A loop through the old town is signposted here under the motto “Right in instead of passing by”. The flair of the town centre with its tempting seats outdoors, ice cream parlours, restaurants and taverns invites people to relax and recover and to tarry a while. It is just another 19 kilometres from Wittlich to the Moselle (Bernkastel-Kues).

A special service for cyclists is on offer at Wittlich main station. Cyclists arriving by train can use the cyclists' bus which brings them to several destinations in the Eifel and from there back to Wittlich again.

And then there is the offer by the Tourist-Information Moseleifel-Touristik e.V. Cyclists can make a firm booking for cycle transport for their groups. There is no pushing and shoving, the bus arrives at the agreed location, the cycles (up to 25) are stowed in the bus and the journey to the destination, which the group decided on before, can begin!
