Industrial areas I and Ia
Industrial area 1 with its 51 hectares for trade is located directly on the L 52 and extends between the B 49 and the motorway A 1. In 1982, these industrial areas were extended by six hectares along the B 50, Industrial area 1 A, which is accessible via Gottlieb-Daimler-Strasse. Both industrial areas are for the most part developed.
In Industrial area 1, with its roads called Edison-, Gutenberg- Röntgen- and Lilienthal-strasse, the largest employers are the companies Ideal-Standard, Simon Fleisch GmbH and Stahlbau Ziemann. Despite the difficult prevailing conditions for the meat-processing branch, the Simon company, as one of the largest abattoirs in Rhineland-Palatinate is currently expanding its cutting up and selling sectors. Several car dealers have set up their businesses along the access road to Industrial Area 1.
Wittlich’s link to the new A 60 has brought great advantages for companies in industrial area 1. Vehicles heading for Eifel/Belgium and towards Trier/Luxembourg can now reach the Wittlich-West access road in the shortest time via the L 141, without having to use roads inside the town.
Industrial area 1 a is marked by several retail trade companies with a varying range of products available, which present themselves to clients along Gottlieb-Daimler-Strasse. In addition to retail trade products suitable for inner towns, above all companies have settled here which are often to be found on access roads and the immediate outskirts of town centres. Apart from a filling station and a car dealer's, there is also a McDonald's restaurant here. Craft businesses from the construction and metal-working trades round off the range.
Industrial area II
With 118 hectares, Industrial area 2 is the largest industrial and trade area of the town of Wittlich in terms of expanse. The first discussion on zoning these connected construction areas date back to 1969. The entire area is accessible via the Rudolf-Diesel-Strasse which joins the B50 in the south and the B49 in the north. Today the 600 metre long thoroughfare is frequently used as a link between these two federal highways.
Industrial area 2 is marked by large companies well-known worldwide, which set up their business premises in Wittlich already early on. One example of this is the Dunlop tyre plant which has been on an expansion course since starting production in Wittlich. In 2004,, the “European Distribution Centre for Lorry Tyres” was established with a 30,000 m² large warehouse in the Dunlop company's grounds.
Things are happening in Industrial area 2. So Franklin Electric Europe Company is planning to build a 2,200 m² central warehouse, the Benninghoven company will build a further production hall in Otto-Hahn-Strasse. The Elsen company is constructing an MAN station in Industrial area 2. At the beginning of April 2005, the Kainz company opened its new BMW car showrooms in Max-Planck-Strasse. These extensive investments by Wittlich-based companies speak in favour of the location Wittlich. Anyone investing contrary to the general trend even in economically difficult times, has confidence in the quality of the location and appreciates its advantages. In addition to commercial companies and numerous production plants, Industrial area 2 also accommodates the Vocational Training Schools and the Intercompany Vocational Training Centre. The customs office, the special purpose Eifel/Moselle Water Supply Association and the RWE power supply utility are to be found in this industrial area just like the large sport hall belonging to the Vocational Training Schools. There is a direct link to Industrial area 1a via Justus-von-Liebig-Strasse.
In Industrial area 2 the town of Wittlich still has two 2 commercial sites available with development potential. The sites located in Otto-Hahn-Strasse are partly located under the high voltage power lines proceeding there, which impairs the development potential. Thus company buildings must not exceed a certain height. This is why the premises are also available on more favourable terms. The sales price is below the market prices normally applicable.
Industrial area III
A further addition to Wittlich's first Industrial area is Industrial area 3 which can be reached via Röntgenstrasse directly from the L 52, or through Industrial area 1. The further 20 hectares of Industrial area lie alongside the A1 motorway, from where they are readily visible. The zoning of these construction areas was in response to a concrete wish for settlement by a well-known company. The Aldi company constructed its Central Warehouse South there on a 13 hectare site and has extended it several times in the meantime. Seven hectares are still available for further industrial settlement. Opposite Aldi's Central Warehouse is the Colosseum discotheque. The Wittlich Business Week takes place in industrial area 3 every three years.
Wengerohr Industrial area
Wengerohr Industrial area with its roughly 50 ha is located to the east of the Wittlich-Wengerohr district, directly by the Saarbrücken – Koblenz railway line with the IC-stop Wittlich main station. If until recently traffic into and out of the area had still to be routed via Bahnhofstrasse or Belinger Strasse, Wengerohr Industrial area can now be easily reached via Dr.-Oetker Strasse. The traffic situation will become even more convenient if, in a few years time, the Wengerohr east bypass and thus the direct link to the A1/A48 and the A 60 is constructed. The planned construction of the new B 50 to Hahn airport and to the Rhine/Main conurbation will upgrade the location even more.
Over 1500 people are currently employed in Wengerohr Industrial area. The largest employer and at the same time also the largest company is the worldwide active Dr. Oetker company which at the moment employs over 1.000 persons on its payroll. Only recently the general meeting approved a change of company from “Dr. Oetker Tiefkühlkost GmbH” to “Dr. Oetker Tiefkühlprodukte GmbH Wittlich” and the relocation of the company's registered office seat in this sector from Bielefeld to Wittlich. With the companies Helmut Meeth Fensterbau (windows), ABF-Technik, MSR, Lehnen-Edelstahl and Ideal Fensterbau Weinstock GmbH there are further larger companies active in Wengerohr Industrial Area. A number of smaller medium-sized companies round off the range in Wengerohr.
“Wengerohr South” Industrial area
The areas available for settlement in the existing industrial and trade zones of the town of Wittlich are for the most part used up. Neither in Industrial areas I to III with a total of 195 hectares located on either sides of the B 50 in the southeast of the town, nor in the Wengerohr Industrial area (50 hectares) are there still adequately large plots of land available for establishing new companies or extending existing ones. Thus the only way to provide the areas required for a further development of the business location was to zone new industrial and trade areas. Wittlich Town Council therefore decided as early as October 1997 on the outline planning of a further industrial area in order to place Wittlich in good time in the competition among municipalities to provide European locations. The Wengerohr-South Industrial area has a total area of 90 hectares. The settlement areas have already been partly developed and are currently being marketed by Wittlich Municipal Authority.
In Wengerohr-South Industrial area, some 70 hectares of building land are available for new industrial settlements. The development plan has been prepared and approved by the town council as a statute. So there is nothing more in the way of the settlement of companies. The first companies have already settled along Dr. Oetker-Strasse. A brisk demand indicates that further settlements will follow soon.
The shape and size of the building plots can be adapted to the companies' requirements. The town of Wittlich owns large plots in the new industrial area, so that the medium-term need for sites can also be satisfied from the town's own property. Dr.-Oetker-Strasse is also the new connection between the existing Wengerohr industrial area and the supra-regional transport network. This has led to a considerable relief of the inner-town road in Wengerohr.
The new industrial area in the Wengerohr district will be accessed via the old B50. With the completion of the section of the new B 50 under construction from Wittlich motorway interchange to the existing B 50 between Wengerohr and Platten, the industrial areas in Wengerohr are directly linked to the traffic axis A 1 Trier- Koblenz as well as the A 60 to Belgium/Benelux. Even before the completion of the new B 50 there is a direct link to the A 1 via the Wittlich-Mitte access road. In 2005, a park + ride parking area was completed which is directly linked to the pedestrian subway to Wittlich main station. So the workplaces in the companies are easily accessible for people travelling by train, too.
Since mid-2005 uniformly designed signboards show lorry drivers and clients unfamiliar with the area the route to the companies which settled in the Wengerohr and Wengerohr-South Industrial areas. At the beginning of Dr.-Oetker-Strasse at the B 50 there is an information board with layout plan and an alphabetic list of the companies. This location underlines the double function of the new road, which not only is the access road to the new Wengerohr-South industrial, but at the same time the main approach road to the existing companies on the other side of the railway line.
The construction of Dr.-Oetker-Strasse and the further development of the Wengerohr-South Industrial area was promoted with funds from the State of Rhineland-Palatinate and the European Union. The good cooperation between the Town of Wittlich and the agencies involved (economic promotion) of the District of Bernkastel-Wittlich and the State government will contribute to a speedy settlement of the new industrial- and trading area, thus creating further jobs at the Wittlich location.
